“So encourage each other and build each other up.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NLT
Paul realised the importance and value of encouragement. He knew it was something freely available to all of us and cost nothing to give, but that the returns could be immeasurably great!
A thoughtful gift, kind action or caring word can be enough to steer a sick, lonely or down person back into hope's light. An encouraging word to an unsure youngster can boost confidence and give direction and a helping hand can break down barriers and touch people's hearts.
All it takes to show appreciation for those around us is a little time, imagination and thoughtfulness. Remember, an ear that is quick to listen is far more valuable and encouraging than a mouth always ready to talk. So when listening, let your facial expressions and body language reflect your attention and interest in hearing what the other person has to say and do not interrupt or rush the speaker.
Freely given smiles, pleasant expressions, sincere compliments and appreciation are all the demonstrations of an encouraging spirit. Also be quick to congratulate people on their achievements. You will find that your happiness for others is the fertilizer for your own happiness.
You may not always witness the results of your encouragement, but it can be life-shaping and life-changing.
So don't be stingy with your encouragement: Give it freely and frequently.
